Scaling Up Air Quality Management for Kampala City
The assignment will scale up air quality management for Kampala City: emissions inventory and source apportionment to support Kampala capital city authority’s (KCCA) SEACAP design and implementation under the covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan African cities. The objectives of the project are to perform a baseline feasibility for Particulate Air Quality assessment in urban setting. This is a 3-month sampling campaign in which daily samples are collected at a site, in urban Kampala, >1,120m above the sea level, within the central urban Kampala. We are using one High Volume Aerosol Sampler DHA-80 with TSP head at the Town House of the KCCA headquarters site. The project commenced in June 2022, currently analyzing the Trial Run Samples before conducting the full study from late May, 2023. The chemical analyses and data processing should allow us to perform a source apportionment using for example the software PMF5.0 from US-EPA, and also provide some indication of the concentrations for some specific chemical species of organic and inorganic nature, that could be connected at some point with health data. The proposed measurements of Oxidative Potential of the PM will be among the very first ones performed in an African country and are also very interesting for the evaluation of the health impact of air pollution leading to the guidance for policy and standards formulation.
